it has on the other hand happened to me with tiny baby fish and small frogs. you can put something like a grade over your intake i have even used the foot out of panty hose with a rubber bandband to closed it.

The exclusively fish really that live well without one are species that can take 5g or smaller tanks (but even then it's not a bad idea).
